This course provides the students, primarily in health-related programs, with an in-depth understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Biological principles, as well as the structural and functional relationships among several organ systems, are discussed.

This course is a continuation of BIO101. This course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the structure and function of the remaining organ systems. Interrelationships among organ systems are emphasized.

BC101 ~ Medical Administration Principles
6.0 Quarter Credit Hours
This course provides the student an overview of the billing/coding specialist profession, their responsibilities as well as technical qualification. The course defines medical-legal terms and the different types of laws that govern medical facilities. HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations are extensively discussed. General concept of insurance and health insurance terms is introduced. In this course students will also learn basic administrative procedures relevant to the billing professions such as appointment scheduling and developing an insurance claim. Basic concept of managed care and keyboarding is also introduced in this course. Additionally, students will enhance their knowledge of managed health care insurance claims and legal and regulatory issues. The focus will also include the various insurance forms associated with the process

EMR101 ~ Health Information System
6.0 Quarter Credit Hours
This course will prepare the student to understand basic computer principles and use electronic records in a medical practice. Health Information System is designed to train future users of electronic health records programs to document patient exams, diagnosis, disorders, and coding. By the completion of this course the student will have the ability to understand and implement the electronic health records software, including data entry at the point of care, electronic coding from medical records using the latest in electronic health records, utilize advanced techniques to speed data entry, use the electronic health records to improve patient care, understand the privacy and security of health records, and use the electronic health records through different technology modes.

HIT101 ~ Foundations of Health Information Technology
4.0 Quarter Credit Hours
This course is aimed at teaching a general structure of the health management profession and its organizational process as well as the purpose, and responsibilities of AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) and JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations). Emphasis is placed on managing all documentation requirements and the content of the health records. Additionally, the student will learn the major difference between data and information, structure of the ORYX system, and health information standards. The concept of the secondary data source is also discussed.

HIT102 ~ Principles of Law and Ethics of Health Information Management
4.0 Quarter Credit Hours
This course focuses on the core ethical obligations of Health Information Technology professionals to protect the patient’s privacy and confidential communication and how it affects the decision making process. Students are also introduced to the step-by-step process that the Health Information Technician (HIT) can use to make appropriate choices and justifications from an ethical perspective. Due to the diverse duties and the fact that Health Information Technicians work with professionals and departments within the health care organization, this course also emphasizes the legal aspects of the Health Information Management profession. It will define the legal necessity of health records and familiarize the students with specific federal and state laws, our court system, and pertinent legal terminology commonly used in this profession. HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) rules and regulations and their influence on the health record field are also reviewed and analyzed.

MED101 ~ Medical Terminology
8.0 Quarter Credit Hours
This course is an introduction to medical terminology and covers word roots, suffixes, and prefixes as it relates to various medical specialties, structures of the body, medical procedures and diseases. Students also receive practical experience in procedures performed in medical specialty facilities.

MED106 ~ Pharmacology
4.0 Quarter Credit Hours
This course will familiarize students with drug classifications, schedules, prescription abbreviations, the metric system, and dosage conversions. Common drugs in the medical office will be studied and the use of the Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR) practiced.

This course introduces students to medical coding and billing practices used in general medical practice.

MED108 ~ CPT Medical Coding

This course focuses on medical coding and billing for specialized medical settings.

MED110 ~ Computerized Billing
5.0 Quarter Credit Hours
This course focuses on the use of coding and billing using Medisoft software in the business office of a medical setting. In addition, the student will learn the following: how to input patient information, process patient transactions, produce various reports, print statements and insurance forms, as well as process claims.

4.0 Quarter Credit Hours
The course will focus on medical coding and billing for a hospital setting.
